Quality food at an affordable rate.

That's exactly what customers can expect when they come to eat at Susie's Shady Nook Family Restaurant.

Located along Route 873 in Slatington, the restaurant has been chosen as Business of the Month by the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce.

Previously owned by Susie Olewine until she passed away in December, the business was opened in 1984.

Prior to that, Susie leased and managed the former Maple Springs Dairy Bar for three years before she and her husband, Marvin, purchased what was then known as Endy's Shady Nook.

While her husband, Marvin, has assumed ownership of Susie's Shady Nook, he deferred the real credit to Susie.

"She wouldn't have been in business for 26 years if it wasn't good," Marvin Olewine said. "I'm basically going to keep it going in her honor."

Marvin, who also owns Marvin C. Olewine Jr. Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Slatington, was quick to praise employees Lisa Szoke and Carol Remaley.

"Without them, I wouldn't have been able to keep it going," he said. "It's a little hectic for me right now."

In what has long been overdue, Marvin said the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce will posthumously present its 16th annual Spirit Award to Susie tonight at the Other Side Restaurant in Neffs.

Not one to seek the spotlight, Marvin said Susie annually requested that others be honored for the award.

"It's really in honor of her, for all her community work," Marvin said. "She had turned the nomination down in the past; this is just their way of honoring her now."

Nonetheless, Marvin said Susie is "very deserving" of the achievement.

"She wouldn't want to be recognized; she turned it down so other people could get it," he said. "She had a big heart."

The award is given to the member of the community that exemplifies community volunteerism, community spirit, and has helped the community in various ways.

Among the organizations Marvin said Susie was involved in were as a member of the GNLCC; Northern Lehigh Programs & Events Committee, where she was an organizer, judge and former grand marshal of the Slatington Halloween Parade; on the Heritage Day committee; on the Properties of Merit committee; former president of the Northern Lehigh Jaycees; served on the Washington Township Zoning Hearing Board for 10 years, was involved in Girl Scouts, and was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Slatington.

"She did a lot of community service," Marvin said. "This was her life, period."

Susie's Shady Nook Family Restaurant is open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, breakfast only.
