Weissport Council opened bids last night to sell off a used 1988 Ford F-350 dump truck and a used 1998 Ford Crown Victoria police car and awarded the vehicles to the highest bidders.

Council had set a minimum bid of $1,500 for the dump truck and a minimum bid of $1,200 for the police car.

Two bids were received for the police car and one bid was received for the dump truck.

Bidding for the police car and dump truck was the Police Car Store, LLC, Bala Cynwyd, Pa.,$1,279 for the police car and $1,500 for the dump truck. Daniel Evans of Slatington bid $2,135.35 for the police car.

Weissport has retained the yellow 1997 Ford F-350 dump truck for borough use.

Last year council had a discussion about retaining or selling one or both of the dump trucks. Council had purchased the yellow dump truck in December 2008 for $7,500 because the blue dump truck could not be licensed due to a rusted out floor.

Back in August 2009, the yellow truck had failed brakes the first time it was used, plus the plow wouldn't lift up for the operator. The yellow truck was repaired at Lehighton Ford, while the then mayor Tina Hagenbuch had her mechanic make $700 of repairs to the blue truck, which included repairing the floor. Presently the blue truck needs repairs to the transmission.

Council purchased a 2008 police car last year at a cost of $28,000 from Tri-Star in Monroeville through a grant from Department of Economic Development in August 2009.

Council is seeking a person to be seated on the Weissport Zoning Hearing Board as of May 1, due to resignation of a member. Anyone interested should contact any council member for information.

Borough worker Dennis Moser asked council to purchased a pallet of tar at an approximate cost of $1,690 and a squeegee at a cost of $58 to repair cracks in borough streets.

Council also approved having Weeds Inc. spray the levee for weed control.

Council also discussed having Franklin Township install a fence around a sewer equipment recently installed in the borough that is in proximity to the playground.

Susan Pywar, playground coordinator, said that volunteers are need on Saturday to help complete the borough playground. Anyone interested should contact Pywar for information.
