Thousands of anglers enjoyed the first day of trout season in or near waterways throughout our area this weekend, as the annual season opened in selected parts of the state. Pictured trout fishing along the Little Schuylkill River in Tamaqua, top photo, is Mike Heffelfinger of Nesquehoning. Retrieving one of his catches is Brian Burns of Nesquehoning, middle left, who also fished the Little Schuylkill in Tamaqua. Fishing under a bridge trestle on Tuscarora Park Road, bottom right, in Tamaqua are John Morgan, 21, and Haivon Kapusnick, 12, both from Mahanoy City. The weather Saturday was beautiful and the catch appeared abundant for many of the first-day anglers. For areas of the state where the season didn't begin, fishermen will have to wait until Saturday, April 17, to launch the season.
