In view of the Cuban crisis, Coaldale borough officials have decided to move ahead with plans to convert two abandoned mine tunnels into fallout shelters. In addition, the former Menconi Store at Second and Philip Street will be used as the communities Civil Defense headquarters. Plans to convert the No. 7 and No. 8 tunnels of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. were initially made a year ago. A committee was named to raise funds for the project.
