Panthers, Fillies, Raiders get volleyball wins

Panther Valley, Marian and Tamaqua all posted volleyball victories on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALLPanther Valley-Pine GrovePanther Valley rolled to a 25-17, 25-9, 18-25, 25-20 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.The Division 3 champion Panthers (12-3, 9-3), who had already clinched their first-ever league playoff berth under coach Nancy Filer, beat their top division rivals thanks to a balanced attack.Carly Mikovich had the game defensive game with 29 digs and also added 10 kills. Also playing weel for the Panthers were Tricia Janowiak (12 kills, 15 service points, four aces); Deanna Focht (three kills, nine service points); Katie Zulick (five blocks, 15 service points); Christa Mantz (17 kills, nine service points, nine digs); Amy Yusella (eight kills, seven assists); Lindsay Kusko (eight digs).Panther Valley won the JV match, 25-10, 25-14.Sch. Haven-MarianMarian's five seniors all made contributions during a Senior Night sweep of Schuylkill Haven.The Fillies rolled to a 25-9, 25-7, 25-5 Schuylkill League victory.Abby Owsinski led a balanced Fillie attack with six kills, three digs, 14 service points and five aces. Also playing well were Devin Parambo (eight kills, six digs); Regina Marzen (13 service points, seven digs); Kayla Stanek (three kills); and Sarah Connely (three kills, four blocks).Marian improved to 14-1 in league play and 16-1 overall. It will travel to unbeaten Nativity on Tuesday.Marian won the JV match, 25-5, 25-8.Mt. Carmel-TamaquaTamaqua swept Mt. Carmel, 25-17, 25-7, 25-7 in a Schuylkill League match.Paige Baddick had a huge game for the Raiders with 25 service points, four aces and 19 assists. Also playing well for Tamaqua were Stacy Wallace (nine service points, six aces, five kills) and Tiffany Billman: (eight service points, four aces, six kills).Tamaqua won the JV match, 2-0Nativity-WeatherlyWeatherly was able to take a game from powerful Pottsville Nativity, but dropped a 25-17, 256-14, 20-25, 25-9 Schuylkill League decision.Weatherly (8-11, 6-9) played an oustanding defensive match against the unbeaten Golden Girls as six different players had at least 15 digs.Leading the way for the Wreckers was Brittany Hinkle with 11 kills, four blocks and 27 digs. Sarah Dolinsky also had a tremendous performance with four kills, three blocks and 30 digs.Other Weatherly players who turned in strong efforts were Rachel Heister (10 assists, 18 digs); Alyssa Kephart (six kills, 21 digs); Sam Strizak (21 digs, five assists); and Alicia Panzarella (15 digs).Nativity posted a 25-5, 25-4 JV victory.Saucon Vy.-LehightonSaucon Valley rolled to a 25-11, 25-13, 25-17 non-league victory over Lehighton.Amanda Windbeck had 20 kills to lead the Indians defensively. Sheena White (five kills) and Molly Hartman (three kills) led Lehighton offensively.For Saucon Valley, coached by former Marian standout Brianne (Homyak) Barona, Ashley Kramer handed out 24 assists and Stephanie Hettler had nine kills.No. Schuylkill-Jim ThorpeNorth Schuylkill rallied for a tightly contested 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 21-25 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.Jess Dawson and Brittany Holland paced the Olympians at the net with eight kills each. Marissa Cantelmi had 18 assists while Jill Andrews led the defense with 23 digs.North Schuylkill won the Jv match, 25-21, 25-20.FIELD HOCKEYNorthwestern-FreedomNorthwestern posted a 3-0 non-league victory over Freedom.Kina Wehr and Lauren Horner both tallied first half goals for the Tigers with Horner's coming on a penalty stroke. Caitlin Bagenstose closed out the scoring in the game's final minutes.Northwestern (11-6-1) finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots. Tiger goalie Sam Rex made three saves to record the shutout.
