Palmerton woman, 91, raped; suspect arrested

An East Stroudsburg man accused of raping a 91-year-old Palmerton woman is behind bars.

Palmerton Police Chief Randy Smith said the incident was reported to the Palmerton Police Department around 1:54 p.m. Saturday.Smith said the victim called police and said a man knocked on her door and requested to use her telephone.That's when the woman told police she was brutally attacked and sexually assaulted, Smith said.Police have identified the suspect as Leslie Settzer, 34, of 388 Race Street, East Stroudsburg.Settzer is charged with criminal attempt to commit homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, four counts of aggravated indecent assault, and three counts of indecent assault.He is currently incarcerated in Carbon County Prison. His bail has been set at $1 million, Smith said.The woman was treated at Palmerton Hospital, and was later taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where she is being treated.Smith said the matter is an "ongoing investigation."The TIMES NEWS is withholding the name of the victim.
