A Tamaqua car wash was taken to the cleaners by burglars last weekend.

Borough police are investigating a report received on Sunday that the Tamaqua Auto Spa on Cedar Street was burglarized.

According to police, an unknown actor entered into the building and broke into a coin changer machine, used to convert bills into coins to operate the manual car wash bays and vacuum machines.

The thief or thieves also went into a safe and removed all of the money.

In addition, a window on the building was discovered broken, with glass scattered on the inside.

The total amount of money taken from the car wash was $5,215.75, police said.

The money is usually removed from the business on a weekly basis by its owner, police explained. However, due to inclement weather, the pick up never got made one weekend, leaving two week's worth of cash on the premises.

Tamaqua Police are continuing the investigation into the burglary and are in the process of interviewing persons of interest in connection with the break-in.

Anyone with information regarding the burglary can contact the Tamaqua Police Department at (570) 668-5000.
