An early morning collision between a mini van and a Regional EMS and Critical Care ambulance shut down Route 443 at the Normal Square intersection in Mahoning Township for several hours. The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. Mahoning Township police, as well as Lehighton and Mahoning Township fire departments responded to the scene. A 62-year-old woman was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene by Carbon county deputy coroner Robert Miller. Mahoning Township police are investigating the deadly crash. This is the first reported accident at the Normal Square intersection since the newly installed traffic lights went into effect on Dec. 16.
